After a long testing period, TeXlive 2009 was released yesterday. This is a great LaTeX and XeLaTeX distribution for every OS.

Between this and Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala)'s launch last week, now is a great time to renew advocacy of awesome free alternatives to Micro$oft's overpriced nonsense!

Also, there are two new LaTeX editors, both of which I like a lot.

TeXworks is very simple (not nearly as complex and feature rich, as, e.g., Kile), but very user-friendly, especially in terms of forward-reverse search:

And another one I've got my eye on, although it's early in development and linux-only, is gummi, which distinguishes itself by featuring a live-updating preview:
